Now in Every Texture
A note from our studio on what a cranial prosthesis is, and a change we have waited a long time for.
When your hair starts to change, you don’t just want a wig. You want to feel like yourself again. You want hair that moves the way yours did, that looks like yours, that lets you walk into a room and think about anything other than your hair.
That’s what a cranial prosthesis is for.
What is a cranial prosthesis?
“Cranial prosthesis” is the medical term for a wig made for hair loss — from chemotherapy, from alopecia, from any condition that changes your hair. It’s the wording your insurance company uses, and it’s worth knowing, because it’s the difference between a wig and a medical necessity.
But the term is clinical, and what we make is anything but. Our Signature pieces are hand-tied, which means every strand is individually knotted by hand, so the hair falls and parts the way real hair does. They’re lightweight. They’re breathable. And inside the cap are medical-grade silicone tabs that hold gently against your scalp — so when the fit is snug, many women wear theirs with no glue or tape at all.
The change we’ve waited for
For a long time, medical wigs came mostly in one kind of hair. If your natural texture was curly, coily, or relaxed, your choices were thin — and too often you were asked to settle for hair that never quite looked like yours.
That changes today.
For the first time at NYC Medical Wigs, our textured collection is available in eleven textures:
- Straight
- Kinky Straight
- Body Wave
- Natural Wave
- Loose Body Wave
- Water Wave
- Deep Wave
- Deep Curly
- Kinky Curly
- Loose Curly
- Loose Wave
So you no longer have to choose between a medical wig and hair that looks like yours. You can have both. In your texture.
A personal note
I’m mixed race, and years ago I wore tape-in extensions, back before they made them in every texture. They were light, my own hair could breathe underneath, and I remember thinking how much the women in my life would love that same feeling — if only it were made for their hair too.
It took the industry a while. But it’s here now.
No one should have to give up looking like themselves to feel comfortable and secure. That’s the whole reason this collection exists.
